September Is India’s Water Month — And Most Buildings Are Completely Unprepared

September is not just another month on the calendar for India’s water managers. It is a pivot month.The monsoon is approaching its final phase. Rainfall patterns begin to change. Groundwater recharge from the season has already done much of its work. Reservoirs, underground tanks and borewells become the buffer that buildings will depend on during the drier months ahead. And this is exactly why September is the right time to ask a simple question- Is your building actually prepared for the months when the rain stops?

For facility managers, building supervisors and RWA committees, water preparedness should not begin when tankers become necessary, borewell levels fall or residents start complaining about irregular supply. By then, the easiest opportunities to reduce water consumption may already have been missed. The good news is that preparing a building for the post-monsoon period does not always require a major infrastructure overhaul. Some of the biggest savings can begin with something surprisingly small: the restroom.
September Is the Water Pivot
India's water cycle is heavily influenced by the southwest monsoon. The Central Ground Water Board's national assessment shows just how important rainfall is to groundwater: rainfall recharge contributes around 60% of India's annual groundwater recharge, with the monsoon season alone accounting for a major share. That makes the transition out of the monsoon particularly important for buildings that depend on groundwater, municipal supply, tank storage or a combination of sources.
The India Meteorological Department's 2026 monsoon forecast had already pointed towards a challenging rainfall scenario. IMD's first-stage forecast projected overall southwest monsoon rainfall at around 92% of the long-period average, with below-normal rainfall also expected over most parts of Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh. Its second-stage forecast gave a 46% probability of below-normal rainfall over Northwest India, compared with 33% for normal and 21% for above-normal rainfall. IMD also noted that neutral ENSO conditions were transitioning towards El Niño conditions and that models indicated El Niño could develop during the southwest monsoon season. This does not mean every building in India will face a water shortage. It means something more practical for facility teams: You should not assume that a good monsoon automatically means a comfortable dry season. IMD's own monsoon withdrawal criteria begin from September in northwest India, while complete withdrawal from the country generally occurs after October 1 depending on weather conditions. In other words, September is the moment to move from "How much rain are we getting?" to "How efficiently are we using the water we already have?"
What Happens to a Building When the Monsoon Ends?
During the monsoon, water can feel abundant. Rainwater fills tanks. Recharge structures receive water. Landscapes remain naturally hydrated. Some buildings may temporarily reduce their dependence on tankers or groundwater. Then the rain becomes less frequent. The building's daily water demand, however, does not disappear. People still need showers. Kitchens still need water. Housekeeping continues. Landscapes need irrigation. Toilets and urinals are used every day. Staff and visitors continue to arrive.The difference is that the supply side becomes less forgiving while demand stays almost constant.
For a commercial building, this can create a familiar chain reaction. Water consumption rises above what the facility can comfortably supply. Storage tanks empty faster. Borewells may need to operate for longer. Tanker dependency increases. Water procurement costs rise. Maintenance teams spend more time monitoring supply. Eventually, the conversation changes from:"How can we save water?" to:"Where can we get more water?" That is the expensive way to manage water. A better approach is to reduce unnecessary consumption before the dry months arrive.

The Restroom Is One of the Easiest Places to Start
When buildings think about water conservation, attention often goes towards rainwater harvesting, wastewater treatment, landscaping and recycling. All of these matter. But there is another opportunity hiding in plain sight: flushing. Conventional urinals use potable water every time they are flushed. In a busy facility, hundreds or thousands of flushes can happen every day. That means water is being consumed for a function where the water itself is not actually necessary. A single conventional urinal can waste approximately 50,000 to 1,50,000 litres of water every year, depending on flushing volume and usage frequency. Now multiply that by the number of urinals in a building. Five urinals. Ten urinals. Twenty. The number becomes significant very quickly. And unlike a large infrastructure project that may require months of planning, replacing conventional urinals with a waterless system can be a relatively straightforward intervention.

For facility managers, this is important because restroom water reduction does not depend on asking every employee, visitor or resident to change their behaviour. The system itself changes. People can continue using the restroom normally. The difference is that water is no longer being used to perform a function that does not require it. That makes waterless urinals particularly relevant for offices, malls, hotels, hospitals, schools, factories, airports, railway facilities, commercial campuses and large residential communities.
What About Odor?
For many facility managers, this is the first question:"If there is no flushing water, won't the restroom smell?" That concern is understandable.Traditional thinking connects flushing with cleanliness and odour control. But flushing does not necessarily solve the source of odour. How to Get Your Facility Ready Before October

1. Count your urinals
Start with a simple inventory. How many conventional urinals are currently installed across your building, floors, blocks or facilities? Do not forget secondary buildings, staff areas, visitor washrooms and high-traffic zones.
2. Understand your current water consumption
Check flush volumes, usage patterns and operating hours. A facility operating 24/7 can have a very different water-saving opportunity from a small office operating eight hours a day.
3. Identify high-traffic restrooms
Start where usage is highest. A waterless urinal installed in a low-use restroom will save water, but a waterless urinal in a high-footfall facility can deliver a much larger impact.
4. Get a site survey

5. Plan installation in phases if required
Large facilities do not necessarily need to replace every urinal at once. You can begin with the highest-use blocks, monitor performance and then expand across the facility.

The objective is simple:Finish the transition before the dry season puts additional pressure on your water system. September is the planning and execution window. October should not be the month when you suddenly discover how much water your building was wasting.
Water Security Starts Before the Shortage
Water conservation is often discussed as a response to scarcity. But the smarter approach is prevention. You do not wait for a building's electricity bill to become unaffordable before replacing inefficient equipment. You do not wait for a pump to fail before thinking about maintenance. Water deserves the same approach. Every litre that does not need to be consumed is a litre that does not have to be pumped, stored, treated, purchased or replaced.
And when the monsoon ends, those avoided litres become even more valuable. The Central Ground Water Board continues to monitor India's groundwater resources through annual assessments, highlighting the importance of managing a resource on which India heavily depends. For buildings, that means water efficiency should not be treated as a seasonal campaign. But September is a very good time to act on it.
