Maintaining a Waterless Urinal

Breaking The Myth

One of the biggest misconceptions around waterless urinals is that they are complicated to maintain. Many facility managers assume that removing water from the system must make cleaning and upkeep more difficult. In reality, the opposite is true.Waterless systems are designed to simplify maintenance, not complicate it. By eliminating constant flushing and reducing moving parts, they remove many of the common issues associated with traditional urinals, like leaks, scaling, and frequent blockages. What you’re left with is a system that is more predictable, easier to manage, and far less demanding on daily operations.

Daily Cleaning

Maintaining a waterless urinal on a daily basis is straightforward and does not require any specialized or complex procedures.

A natural enzymes based cleaner is typically used to clean the surface, ensuring hygiene without introducing harsh chemicals into the system. This is followed by a simple wipe-down, just like any standard restroom fixture. Because there is no continuous water flow spreading residue or creating splashback, cleaning tends to be quicker and more efficient. Staff can maintain hygiene standards without increasing workload or using excessive cleaning agents.

Weekly Maintenance

On a weekly basis, maintenance involves basic checks rather than intensive work.

Facility teams simply inspect the drainage system to ensure smooth flow and verify that everything is functioning as expected. At the same time, odor levels are monitored, although well-designed waterless systems typically prevent odor at the source. This step is more about observation than intervention , ensuring consistent performance rather than fixing recurring issues.

Monthly Deep Cleaning

To maintain long-term efficiency, a monthly deep cleaning routine is recommended.

This usually involves applying an enzyme-based treatment that helps break down organic matter and prevents buildup within the system. Unlike harsh chemicals, enzyme solutions work naturally, supporting both performance and sustainability. This proactive approach keeps the system running smoothly and minimizes the chances of blockages or odor issues over time.

What NOT to Do

Understanding what to avoid is just as important as knowing what to do.

Harsh chemicals, especially acid-based cleaners, should not be used as they can damage components and disrupt the system’s natural functioning. Similarly, over-flushing with water defeats the purpose of the system and can interfere with its efficiency. Waterless urinals are designed to work without these interventions , adding them back only reintroduces the very problems the system is meant to eliminate.

Key Insight

When you look at the full picture, the maintenance story becomes clear.

Waterless urinals are:

1) Less frequent to maintain, because there are fewer recurring issues

2) Less intensive, since cleaning processes are simple and streamlined

3) More cost-effective, due to reduced labor, chemicals, and repairs

Instead of increasing complexity, they actually reduce the operational burden on facility teams.
